Halloween Costumes for NICU Babies

Being a new parent and having your baby rushed into the NICU is traumatic for both mom & dad and their baby.  NICU stays can be days, weeks, or even months.  This means alot of ‘firsts’ happen there – including baby’s first holidays.

When our son was in the NICU he was there for his first Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years.  While the other holidays in the NICU were celebrated, Halloween seemed to go unnoticed.  Our son was born at the end of August, 17 weeks premature, at only 23 weeks into the pregnany.  He was only 1 pound and 7 ounces at birth, so by the time Halloween came he was only around 2.5 pounds.  We wanted to get him a Halloween outfit but we were limited on our options because of his size.  We discoved how many costumes there were for Teddy Bears and dolls (a crazy amount) but that allowed us to pick the perfect costume for his first Halloween – The Hulk.  It brought us laughter and joy to do something normal during a stressful time and the doctors and nurses loved it as well!

We wanted to bring that some laughter and joy to families who find themselves celebrating their baby’s first Halloween in the NICU.  Since 2016 we have been donating Halloween costumes to NICUs.    Fast forward to 2022 we donated 535 costumes to 15 locations

This is truly an event that would not be possible without the support we receive from the community.  We are so grateful every year to be able to help lighten the mood for some families going through something that no parent ever should.

This made my WEEK! I was feeling so upset yesterday and this morning because I realized I completely forgot Halloween was so soon, no time to get a costume for my daughter’s first Halloween.  When I came in and saw the costume sitting there for her, I just about cried with happiness and gratitude! Thank you so much!!

My daughter was actually discharged from the NICU this year on Halloween, which was a complete surprise! Having a costume for her 1st Halloween was the perfect gift plus it fit her personality to a tee.  She is our little wonder woman! She was a trooper in the NICU.  Thank you! This ‘little thing’ was a ‘big’ deal to us.
